How to Understand Mary & Learn From Her (especially if it feels weird or hard)

Here’s something Catholics are not supposed to say: I don’t really feel close to Mary and, on top of that, it feels weird to me to revere here. I’m not supposed to say that, but it’s exactly how I feel. I know so many Catholics feel like they just click with the saints and Mary, but I don’t. Honestly, I have a hard enough time remembering to check in with God, so Mary and the saints just seem like ONE MORE WAY for me to mess this whole thing up, know what I mean?

So, I took that whole idea and decided to DO SOMETHING with it. I prayed with the first chapter of Luke and I asked God to guide me in understanding Mary better.

And, then I was smacked right upside the head with WHY I don’t click with Mary: her holiness is intimidating and unrelatable to me. Let’s discuss: Ok, first of all, can you freaking imagine being so holy? An angel comes to you and tells you a) hey girl, you’re gonna magically become pregnant if that’s cool with you and b) by the way, the baby is the son of God.

I would pass out right after Gabriel was all “hello,” cause, dude, an angel is talking to me, like, what?! Second of all, I’m preeeeetty sure “May it be done to me according to your word.” Would NOT be my answer. (After I got up off the floor) I’d be all, “ok, so, I have questions, Mr. Gabriel.”

Thankfully, I’m not Mary (duh) and God knew what He was doing (double duh). For those of us who struggle with Mary, instead of trying to relate to Mary or become buddy/buddy, let’s try to learn from her example. She was woman of few words who wanted, above all things, to be used as God saw fit.

Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us!
